Leather watch straps - Galuchat: the secrets of an exceptional leather

Galuchat enthusiasts, do you really know the history of this leather?

Also called "Chinese shark" or "dogfish", Galuchat is a species of ray, the stingray, or shark, the dogfish. Coming from the ray, it has large grains giving it a wilder appearance. Conversely, the dogfish provides a small-grained galuchat.

Its name "Galuchat" was given to it by a sheathing craftsman, master Jean-Claude Galluchat. He was the first craftsman in the West to master this leather and to adorn objects that Madame de Pompadour adored. This marquise was the equivalent of an influencer of our time: she embodied the taste for fashion, luxury, exoticism and the quest for rare and expensive things of the 18th century.

Monsieur Galluchat then became the benchmark of his era and covered the rarest objects with this skin, which led to this leather being named after him.

Long forgotten, it reappeared at the beginning of the 20th century in the Art Deco style. It represents the height of luxury and refinement.

The price of Galuchat leather is justified by the difficult work to be done on the skin. Both leather and mineral, it is not treated like other skins. The craftsman performs meticulous work to best preserve the appearance of the leather covered with shimmering pearls. In addition, there is a central pearl on this skin which increases the rarity and value of the product.

Over time, Galuchat has established itself as a leather in its own right. It is for its particularity that the Perrin family introduced it to the Atelier du Bracelet Parisien.

Today, it represents one of the flagship leathers in our collection. Every watch it adorns is suddenly sublimated.
